Now This is What I Call Multitasking
by: Alex Oppenheimer On Feb 8, 2010 09:36:34 pm

This past Saturday, the Miami Dolphins hosted a meeting for their team owners. Heading the group were Stephen M. Ross and Wayne Huizenga, who are the primary owners of the team. However, they’re not the only ones who were in attendance. Amongst the others, you’ve got Grammy awards, successful released music albums, acting careers, and now 52 career professional tennis titles? This could arguably be the most well-rounded, talented ownership group in the NFL and possibly in professional sports.

Venus and Sareena Williams are the newest co-owners of the Dolphins franchise with the aforementioned Ross and Huizenga, Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan, and Marc Anthony.  I believe other figures such as Jimmy Buffett, Jennifer Lopez, and Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, are minor owners of the team as well. More and more celebrities have been seeping into the professional sports ownership roles, even if it is for a percentage or even a fraction of one. Hey, why not? Here’s a look at other famous owners who have had notable careers in other facets.

Russell Crowe is a part owner along with a business associate of the National Rugby League's South Sydney Rabbitohs, which cost the pair about $3 million. Crowe owns about a 75 percent stake, which was purchased in 2008.

Nick Lachey, former singer from the band 98 Degrees, is the part owner of the American Basketball Association's Hollywood Fame and Seattle Mariners' Triple-A affiliate team, the Tacoma Rainiers. Both teams are at the minor league level.

Jon Bon Jovi is the majority owner of the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul, which is currently in suspension due to financial difficulties. He purchased the team back in 2004 and currently co-owns with minority owners such as Ron Jaworski and Richie Sambora, Bon Jovi’s right hand man.

David Letterman co-owns the Rahal Letterman Racing team. Letterman’s team competes in Cart Series and IndyCar races. The team is also known for giving Danica Patrick her start on the IndyCar circuit a few years back.

Jay-Z is part owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets. He purchased his share for an estimated $4.5 million. Jay-Z, being from the Brooklyn area, has shown interest in relocating the team to his hometown, possibly in 2011 or 2012. He has also shown interest in purchasing a share of ownership of the English Premier League's Arsenal FC.

Usher Raymond, commonly known just by his first name, is a co-owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers as of 2005. His share cost him about $375 million. Despite not taking a significant part in team functions with players, Usher likes to focus on the entertainments aspects with the club and the Quicken Loans Arena.

Drew Carey became a minority owner of the Major League Soccer (MLS) team the Seattle Sounders in 2007, which opened up with their inaugural season in 2009.

Celebrity owners seem to be a popular trend nowadays, and honestly, I can’t blame them. They have the cash, they already love the spotlight, and they are usually friendly with the athletes to start with. The Dolphins definitely host the largest crop of celebrity owners, despite if their say is only miniscule. My vote for the celebrity who should be next to take part in ownership of a team has got to be none other Cordozar Calvin Broadus, better known as Snoop D-O-G-G. Dodgers? Lakers? Steelers, anyone?
