Rating the UFC 109 Main Card Fights
by: Ray Chin On Feb 8, 2010 12:50:19 pm

UFC 109 isn't one of the better UFC events but it was still a entertaining night of MMA.  Here is how I ranked them.  Other than the Randy Couture fight none of these fights could be considered classics.

Matt Serra vs Frank Trigg 3.5/5

I love first round knockouts and Matt Serra ended the fight with a Gimli-style counter right, earning the Knockout of the Night.  Matt Serra definitely prove his still got it, Frank Trigg not so much so.  I rank it 3.5 because it was better than the Swick/Thiago fight but not better than the Marquardt/ Sonnen fight.

Demian Maia vs Dan Miller 2/5

Dan Miller was good enough of wrestler to stand up when Maia took him down so the first two rounds ended up being a boring kickboxing match.  Surprisingly it was Maia pushing the action but although his striking has greatly improve, everyone knows he can't finish the fight standing up.  Maia finally took it down in the third round and controlled Miller but he didn't really land anything.  All in all, the fight didn't go as I envision it and it was a bore.  Still the right fighter won.

Mike Swick vs Paulo Thiago 3/5

The fight was mostly kept standing up with both  moving in and out of the pocket a lot and with a lot of counter boxing.  Finally Paulo Thiago got the better of an exchange in the second and knocked Swick down which he then secure the victory with a dars choke.  It is clear Paulo Thiago is on his way up and it is tough to see one of my favorite fighters lose but UFC 109 had a slow start with this fight being the most exciting at this point.

Nate Marquardt vs Chael Sonnen 4/5

Wow, I have never seen Nate “The Great” Marquardt get dominated like that.  I thought Marquardt's ground game was above average but Sonnen totally outclassed him.  He took Nate down easily, constantly improving his positions and he landed some good ground and pound.  Nate had a guillotine choke early but Sonnen eventually got out. Nate also landed a vicious elbow from the bottom opening a nasty cut on Sonnen head making it the bloodiest fight of the day.  Finally after being on the bottom the for most of the match, Nate had a flurry of his own in the third but it was a too little too late as the judges' easily gave this one to Sonnen.  I guess if have to update my rankings and Sonnen gets a title shot against Anderson Silva (assuming he beats Vitor Belfort).  Sonnen may have won but he looks messed up.  This is my fight of the night.

Randy Couture vs Mark Coleman 5/5

It was vintage Randy Couture.  Standing up, Couture was outclassing Coleman with his boxing while mixing in a little clinching/ dirty boxing.  The second round was more of the same then Couture decided to take him down.  He quickly went to mount, landed some punches and got Coleman's back.  From there he sunk in the rear naked choke.  Coleman looked old and he had no answer for one of Randy Couture's best performances.  The fight was hyped as a battle Hall of Famers but I wasn't expecting much but I was thoroughly surprised in the end.

As for the prelims, Rolles Gracie's debut in the UFC was a huge flop.  He gassed out quickly, looked like a noob and it was only a matter of time before the ref stopped it.  Mac Danzig finally won in the UFC and his career there is safe for now.  Phil Davis with his wrestling seems to be an intriguing prospect but he needs to work on finishing the fight.  All in all there were too many judges' decision in the undercard because I like to see fights finish.
