Talk about a waste of time for everyone involved. UFC 109 lived up to all the fans expectations of a card not worth paying for and a main event that was labeled as “The Geezers at Caesars.”
The biggest losers (aside from the fans) are most the fighters who were involved in the festivities starting with Nate Marquardt who took the biggest risk of the night and paid dearly for it. Before coming into his fight Chael Sonnen, Marquardt was seen as the undisputed top contender in the middle-weight division and after the beat down he took from Sonen his stock has fallen considerably.
The same could be said about Mike Swick. Swick took the fight against Paulo Thiago on short notice to prove that his last outing against Dan Hardy was a fluke. A short fight and a nap later Mike Swick found himself set back even farther in the welterweight division by the hands of a relative unknown. Now Swick is a couple losses away from getting paid to clean the mats at American Kickboxing Academy.
Then there is Frank Trigg who basically cemented the fact that he doesn’t belong in the UFC with that performance. I honestly feel bad for Matt Serra, a man who has beaten Georges St. Pierre to win the title and won the Ultimate Fighter but was put in a position where critics were saying before the fight that if he lost he should be cut.
Demian Maia showed two things to the fans this weekend in his fight against Dan Miller. One is that he has worked considerably on his striking but if he hits you he isn’t going to hurt you. And the second is that if he doesn’t get the fight to the ground he will not be in an exciting fight. Maia will need to improve the wrestling and strength aspect s of his game to get to the next level.
And then there was the main event. Everyone loved to see Randy Couture actually finish somebody instead of grinding them out but come on! People shouldn’t have to pay to see Couture beat up on an opponent that is incapable of getting out of the way of a punch and put up a competitive fight. The fight really didn’t do much for Randy Couture’s legacy except to say that he is the best plus forty-five year old in the game today. And as for Mark Coleman, please don’t let him fight anymore. He just looked terrible out there and no one would be enthused to see him fight Tito Ortiz at this point.
