Rating the UFC 109 Main Card Fights
by: Ray Chin On Feb 8, 2010 12:50:19 pm

UFC 109 isn't one of the better UFC events but it was still a entertaining night of MMA.  Here is how I ranked them.  Other than the Randy Couture fight none of these fights could be considered classics.

Matt Serra vs Frank Trigg 3.5/5

I love first round knockouts and Matt Serra ended the fight with a Gimli-style counter right, earning the Knockout of the Night.  Matt Serra definitely prove his still got it, Frank Trigg not so much so.  I rank it 3.5 because it was better than the Swick/Thiago fight but not better than the Marquardt/ Sonnen fight.

Demian Maia vs Dan Miller 2/5

Dan Miller was good enough of wrestler to stand up when Maia took him down so the first two rounds ended up being a boring kickboxing match.  Surprisingly it was Maia pushing the action ...

Quick Predictions: UFC 109 Couture vs Coleman
by: Ray Chin On Feb 5, 2010 12:21:03 pm

Honestly I am not too excited about about UFC 109 but last week I went 5 for 5 in winners of the Strikeforce: Miami main card so let's see how I do this week.

Randy Couture vs Mark Coleman

Randy Couture by judges' decision

This fight has been hyped as a long awaited war between two legends/ Hall of Famers, but it is few years too late as both fighters are past their prime (46 and 45 yrs old respectively).  I have already predicted this fight to be a snoozefest with a clinch game to be the predominant strategy and with both fighters gassing out early.  Still this is Randy Couture fight to lose and I doubt Mark Coleman will have ...

Chess Boxing: Now That Is An Idea I Can Get Behind
by: Ray Chin On Feb 4, 2010 12:17:34 pm

In the past, I have written a lot of about simply atrocious ideas for MMA but here is an idea I do like, chess boxing.  It is not exactly MMA but it is still a fighting sport and you win either by knockout, judges' decision, by checkmate or if your opponents' time runs out in speed chess.  It really takes a special person to excel in alternating rounds of chess and boxing.  Here is why chess boxing is not absurd and something I would definitely watch.

1)- Chess boxers are true hybrid athletes

I think about stereotypical chess players and stereotypical boxer...

The Seer's Fortunes for the Knicks Starting Five
by: Ray Chin On Feb 3, 2010 12:40:56 pm

I have used tarot cards (kinda), the card game of war and a magic 8 ball (again kinda) for my previous predictions so I think the natural progression is the use of fortune cookies from a recent trip to a Chinese restaurant.  Never underestimate the power of the fortune cookies no matter how vague the fortune is.

David Lee

Fortune: The shortest distance between two people is a smile.

At first this seems like a puzzling fortune because no one can get too far in the NB...

Ranking The Top UK MMA Fighters
by: Ray Chin On Feb 2, 2010 12:22:28 pm

I recently wrote a post on the best MMA fighters country by country but I had a debate about how the UK MMA fighters ranked with a friend (yes he is British) and this is how I ranked them.

Michael Bisping (18-2)

Bisping is perhaps the new face of the British MMA (Ian Freeman is the old face).  He was the coach for the Team UK in The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom and although he lost to rival coach Dan Henderson, he rebounded with a dominant win over Denis Kang kicking him out of the UFC.

Dan Hardy (23-6)

Dan Hardy became the number one contender for Georges St- Pierre belt by defeating Mike “Quick” Swick.  But the road Dan Hardy took wasn't an easy one w...

What Do a Cyborg, a Football Legend and a Pro Wrestler Have in Common?
by: Ray Chin On Feb 1, 2010 12:42:21 pm

They are all MMA fighters who won their fights last Saturday.  Strikeforce recently has been putting a lot of great MMA cards and Strikeforce: Miami is no different. All the fights in the main card ended either in a TKO or KO.

Strikeforce on EAsports= EPIC FAIL

EASportsMMA.com was supposed to air an undercard fight of Jay Hieron vs Joe Riggs free but many people were unable to get the feed because the servers were overwhelmed and those who did get the feed experienced massive lag.  Strikeforce/ EAsports have better shape up if they want to compete with the UFC.  The next question is Jay Hieron's status in Strikeforce and is he going to get a title shot against Nick Diaz.  If not, it would be likely for Jay Hieron to move on and perhaps sign with the UFC.

As expect...

Quick Predictions: Strikeforce Miami
by: Ray Chin On Jan 29, 2010 12:33:39 pm

Despite a number of intriguing MMA matches, everyone is really going to tune in to see how two Strikeforce newcomers, Herschel Walker and Bobby Lashley would do.  I am especially excited to see Cyborg Santos fight again.

Nick Diaz vs Marius Zaromskis

Nick Diaz by submission in the second round

Marius Zaromskis is knockout artist and he can win the fight with one shot.  However Nick Diaz is more well rounded and his BJJ should be the edge he needs to win. Still I have a friend who is convince that Marius Zaromskis is the best fighter.  We'll see.

Cristiane Cyborg Santos vs Marloes Coenen

Cyborg Santos by knockout in the first round

I honestly don't think Marloes Coenen has much of a chance against arguably (maybe not so much so) the best female...

MMA One Fight Wonders
by: Ray Chin On Jan 28, 2010 12:38:02 pm

Like one hit wonders in music, these fighters are only known for one impressive win without following it up.  Sometimes you have to wonder whether is better to be lucky than good.

Keith Hackney

Keith Hackney was a one fight wonder from the early days of the UFC.  He was known as the giant killer and for good reason.  He knock out the sumo Emanuel Yarborough in under two minutes.  To put that in perspective, Yarborough weights close to 600 pounds and Hackney weight about a 1/3 of that at around 200 pounds.  That fight proved size doesn't matter but since that fight Hackney has not done much in MMA.  He has kept a low profile but does have a small (I mean small) movie career going.

Gary Goodridge

Gary Goodridge had a great showing in UFC 8. ...

MMA Fighters' Odd Second Jobs
by: Ray Chin On Jan 27, 2010 01:03:44 pm

Unless you're are a top fighter or superstar (like Kimbo Slice) it is tough to be make a living out of MMA and often fighters have to get second jobs.  You got to respect them for balancing family life, work and training.  This is list of jobs you wouldn't think a MMA fighter would have and these aren't your typical army, security, action movie jobs that most associate with fighters.

The English Teacher in Japan Roxanne Modafferi

Just the thought of a MMA fighter teaching Japanese children to speak English is just weird.  But if there was a fighter to do it, it would be Roxanne Modafferi.  Roxanne Modafferi is one of top Women MMA fighter at the 135 division often utilizing her great ground game to win.  All teachers know every once in awhile the students drive you crazy and I wonder if Modafferi...

Knicks Mid-season Report Card
by: Ray Chin On Jan 26, 2010 11:55:21 am

Surprisingly the Knicks are on the borderline of being a playoff team (but that is more of a sign of how bad the East has been lately).  They had a rough start but played much better lately.  Yet time after time they still can't beat the top contending teams.  I think you will see how the lack of consistency is a major theme of this team.

Starting 5:

David Lee A-

David Lee is a double double team averaging, 19.2 ppg and 11.40 rebound per game.  The only notch against him is that he doesn't guard bigger centers well but you really can't fault him too much for it.  David Lee is the most consistent player and he is having a great contract year.

Danilo Gallinari B+

Gallinari definitely has the potential to be a superstar and maybe a franchise pla...
